Captain Picard learns that Lieutenant Data has been taken hostage on the planet Baku and immediately leads the Enterprise to rescue him. When they arrive at Baku, only six hundred Baku people live on the planet, isolated from the world, shunning technology, advocating peace, and living a simple life; Data's abduction does not seem to align with Baku customs, suggesting there is more to the story. Captain Picard meets a Baku woman named Anij, who informs him that although the Baku appear young, the original inhabitants of the planet are actually over three hundred years old. Facing the aging Son'a, they discover the secret to the Baku's immortality lies in the special radiation surrounding the planet, which constantly restructures their genetic makeup. Now the Baku are threatened with extinction… The Son'a from outer space connect with the interstellar alliance and have created an identical environment based on the original Baku village, scheming to relocate the Baku to this virtual village to monopolize the fountain of youth. The leader of the Son'a, Ru'afo, uses the pretext of a cultural inspection to enter Baku, intending to drive the Baku people away and occupy the planet. Captain Picard presents the intelligence he has gathered to Admiral Dougherty, only to find out that the Admiral and the Starfleet Headquarters have been aware of this situation and are secretly involved in the conspiracy. Dougherty dismisses Picard’s protests and orders the Enterprise to return immediately, forbidding interference. Captain Picard faces a critical moment; if he obeys the orders, he would betray the oath he took when he joined Starfleet, while if he takes action, he must sacrifice his career, his crew, the Enterprise, and everything to engage in this heavenly battle.
