Ten years after the American Civil War, former hero Nathan (Tom Cruise) spends his days drinking heavily due to idleness. By chance, he meets a Japanese businessman visiting America for trade. Nathan's remarkable achievements impress the businessman. At this time, during the Meiji Restoration, the Japanese emperor wishes to train a modern combat force, and Nathan is invited to Japan. Many samurai in Japan do not welcome Nathan's arrival; they are resolutely unwilling to abandon the traditional samurai spirit and are very resistant to the westernization of their warriors.
