On an ordinary day, two young boys named Zachary and Ethan have a dispute in a park, during which the former breaks the latter's mouth with a stick. This minor children's conflict brings together two couples who would otherwise have no connection. Mike Longstreet (John C. Reilly), who runs a small discount store, and Penelope (Jodie Foster), a writer and Ethan's parents, welcome Zachary's parents—lawyer Alan Cowan (Christoph Waltz) and investment broker Nancy (Kate Winslet)—to their home. They negotiate, discuss, argue, exchange sarcastic remarks, and indirectly criticize each other, at times forcing smiles and at times showing displeasure, but inevitably facing each other throughout this exhausting and painful day... This film won the Best Ensemble Award at the 2011 Boston Society of Film Critics Awards and the Silver Lion at the 2011 Venice Film Festival.
