In 1904, the Qing government began the construction of the Jingzhang Railway from Beijing to Zhangjiakou. The British and Russian countries simultaneously competed for the construction rights, resulting in a stalemate. The Qing government did not dare to offend either side and decided to build it independently. In 1905, Zhan Tianyou was hired as the chief engineer (now known as an engineer), and foreigners mocked, saying, "The Chinese engineer who can build this road has yet to be born." With his noble sense of responsibility and tenacious will, Zhan Tianyou overcame numerous obstacles with the strength of our own nation, and finally completed the railway in 1909, making it the first railway truly built independently by China, marking a glorious page in the history of Chinese railways and greatly boosting the confidence of our people. Subsequently, besides accepting invitations to build four railways, Zhan Tianyou also passionately planned to construct the Guangzhou-Hankou Railway to create a major trunk line connecting the North and South of China with the planned Jinghan Railway. However, in 1911, the Qing government issued an order to nationalize all privately operated railways, forcing Zhan Tianyou to hand over the Guangzhou-Hankou Railway, which left him feeling extremely desperate. The same year, the Xinhai Revolution broke out, leading to the fall of the Qing dynasty. In 1912, the Republic of China was established, and the new provisional president, Sun Yat-sen, proposed a grand plan for the "national railway network construction," while also proposing to merge the originally planned Sichuan-Hankou and Guangzhou-Hankou railways into the Hanyuechuan Railway Company, inviting Zhan Tianyou to serve as co-chairman.
