In 2012, the economic situation in the United States worsened, and crime rates skyrocketed. The increasingly privatized prisons resorted to unscrupulous means for profit, leading to the emergence of the "Death Race" competition. Formerly a top race car driver, Frank (played by Jason Statham) gets involved in a worker protest at a factory. That night, someone breaks into his home and kills his wife, and Frank is wrongfully imprisoned as the culprit. The prison warden and organizer of the Death Race, Hennessy (played by Joan Allen), demands that Frank take the place of the deceased masked driver Frankenstein and promises that if Frank wins just one race as Frankenstein, he will gain his freedom. Frank enters this deadly game with his navigator Case (played by Natalie Martinez), driving modified cars and facing the constant threat of death.
