Beautiful rich girl Fanny (Abbie Cornish) is captivated by fashion, and designing and making clothes for herself is her greatest pleasure. By chance, she comes across the not-so-successful poetry collection of her neighbor, the poor boy Keats (Ben Whishaw), and is drawn to his words, seeking every opportunity to get close to the melancholic man. Under Keats' influence, Fanny begins to learn about and appreciate poetry, and as they spend time together, the two fall deeply in love. However, their relationship faces various oppositions from the beginning. During the times they are apart, the lovers convey their feelings through letters. When Keats returns, he gives Fanny an engagement ring and a poem titled "Bright Star," and they continue to hold on to their love amidst all the opposing voices. Soon, Keats' new work is finally published, but by then, he has developed a serious lung disease... Directed by Jane Campion, who won the Palme d'Or for "The Piano," the film was selected for the main competition at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for Best Costume Design at the 82nd Academy Awards.
