After the grand royal wedding in Vienna, Sissi (Romy Schneider) begins her life as an empress. She gradually adjusts to life at the Austrian court, but she finds it very difficult to get along with Empress Sophie (Magda Schneider). The domineering Empress strictly adheres to royal customs and constantly instructs Franz (Karlheinz Böhm) on how to govern the empire and family according to royal regulations. After Sissi's daughter is born, the conflict between her and Sophie intensifies. Sophie insists that Sissi cannot raise her daughter herself, and Franz surprisingly complies with his mother's wishes, keeping Sissi and her daughter apart. Heartbroken and disappointed, Sissi returns to Bavaria alone. Guilt-ridden, Franz quickly follows her and persuades Sissi to return to Austria with him. At this point, Sophie is forced to change her mind and agrees to let Sissi raise her daughter. Subsequently, Sissi accompanies Franz on visits to multiple countries, and in Hungary, she receives a warm welcome. Amidst the cheers of the Hungarian people, they are crowned as the King and Queen of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The film was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 10th Cannes Film Festival.
