In April 1942, during World War II, the German Navy employed "wolf pack" tactics in the Atlantic, causing heavy losses for the Allies. U.S. Navy Lieutenant Tyler (played by Matthew McConaughey) was promised a promotion to submarine captain due to his outstanding performance against the enemy, but was unable to fulfill this promise due to unforeseen circumstances.
