In April 1942, during World War II, the German Navy employed "wolf pack" tactics in the Atlantic, causing heavy losses for the Allies. U.S. Navy Lieutenant Tyler (played by Matthew McConaughey) was promised a promotion to submarine captain due to his outstanding performance against the enemy, but was unable to fulfill this promise due to unforeseen circumstances. Suddenly, an enemy alert arises, and Tyler is urgently assigned to board the aging submarine S-33 to carry out a secret mission, under the command of Lieutenant Mike (played by Bill Paxton), with fellow officers including Lieutenant Harsch (played by Harvey Keitel) and Major Kunan. After reconnaissance, a damaged German submarine U-571 is found sending out a distress signal. The mission of the S-33 is to disguise itself as a German repair ship to use repair as a cover in order to obtain Germany's most advanced decoding equipment from U-571. However, because S-33 is outdated and its equipment, including the ballast tanks, is at the end of its service life, there is a risk of danger if they dive below 200 meters. Nonetheless, in order to complete the mission, Tyler and the others carefully pilot the submarine and launch a surprise attack on the German warship. At that moment, German torpedoes are also closing in on U-571, putting their lives in jeopardy...
