In the last months of World War II, 22-year-old Hiroo Onoda was conscripted and trained in guerrilla warfare and intelligence at a Japanese military school. His training did not align with traditional samurai values, and when he was sent to fight on Lubang Island in the Philippines, his only command was "absolutely do not commit suicide," and to survive under any circumstances. His first mission upon landing on the island was to destroy the airport and harbor to counter the landing American aircraft. However, this mission failed, and the American attacks forced Onoda and his teammates to retreat into the jungle. The war soon ended, but Onoda and his comrades viewed the news of Japan's surrender as a deceptive tactic. They hid in the jungle, living off banana peels, coconuts, and stolen rice. Even surrounded by snakes, insects, and rats, they refused to surrender due to hunger. Even when Japanese search teams found them, they were regarded as traps to lure them out. Onoda firmly believed he was carrying out a secret mission to control the island before the Imperial Army returned, convinced that the war was not over.
