The most brutal battle of the Pacific War, which turned the tide of World War II, Iwo Jima... In June 1944, the Allied forces successfully landed in Normandy, marking a turning point in their victory. The U.S. military was able to shift its focus to the Pacific, landing on Saipan in June and Guam in July, with General MacArthur returning to the Philippines. Japan stubbornly defended Iwo Jima with a force of about 21,000 troops, while the U.S. deployed three divisions comprising 75,000 men and 495 ships, in addition to 155 other vessels such as destroyers and aircraft carriers, for a full-scale assault on Iwo Jima. This documentary was filmed at great risk by the photography team of the U.S. Third Command and remains the only faithful record of World War II's "Battle of Iwo Jima"!
