Arthur (played by Terence Stamp) faces the challenge of supporting his wife Marion (played by Vanessa Redgrave), who, despite suffering from a terminal illness, continues to participate in a local senior choir. This choir, organized by a young music teacher, Elizabeth (played by Gemma Arterton), serves not only as a place for the town's elderly to pass the time but also as an opportunity to make new friends. However, the stubborn Arthur neither supports nor understands Marion's passion for singing; he only wishes for her to rest comfortably at home. Ultimately, Arthur cannot hold Marion back; even in her final moments, she fulfills her wish to participate in a choir competition. The senior choir successfully passes the preliminary round of the competition, and Marion passes away peacefully afterward. While Elizabeth and the other seniors try to help Arthur cope with his grief, the resolute Arthur pushes them away and even lashes out at his own son, James (played by Christopher Eccleston). Arthur initially intends to isolate himself in his sorrow over losing his beloved wife, but several unexpected conversations with Elizabeth slowly help him understand Marion's love for the choir and begin to reflect on his relationship with his son. Gradually, it seems that Arthur starts to open his heart. He resolves to embrace a new life in honor of his late wife, Marion.
