In the late 1920s, to fulfill his master's wishes, Chen Zhen (played by Jet Li) went to the East to learn advanced techniques, where he fell in love with a Japanese girl named Yamada Mitsuko (played by Shun Nakayama). After the death of his master, Huo Yuanjia, Chen Zhen returned to China to assist his master's son, Huo Tingen (played by Qian Xiaohao), in running the Jingwu School, which unexpectedly sparked jealousy and power struggles among the brothers. On the other hand, Chen Zhen investigated the cause of his master’s death and suspected that the Japanese army officer Fujita Go (played by Billy Chow) secretly used chronic poison to kill Huo Yuanjia. Chen Zhen asked a doctor to perform an autopsy, confirming that his master indeed died of poisoning. Fearing that the conspiracy would be exposed, Fujita Go set up a chain of murders to frame others, leading to a series of fierce battles. Soon, Fujita Go challenged the Jingwu School, luring the head instructor of the Japanese Black Dragon Society, Funakoshi Bunbu, to contest against Jingwu. On the day of the duel, both sides engaged in a thrilling final battle.
