During the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty, Yang Jikang (played by Dong Kedi), the Deputy Minister of Revenue, dissatisfied with the treacherous official Yan Song's power, claimed he was too old and wanted to retire to his hometown. On the occasion of his sixtieth birthday, his daughters and sons-in-law came to celebrate, each vying to support him in his old age. The third daughter Yang Sanchun (played by He Ying) and her husband Zou Yinglong (played by Fang Xuewen) came to pay their respects but were greeted coldly by their maternal relatives due to inadequate gifts.
