At the market in Qingshan Town, the bustling scene is full of prosperity. Among the crowd, four children are chasing and playing; when it comes to these four mischievous sixth-graders from Qingshan Primary School—Niu Niu, Gang Wa, Yuan Bao, and Ni Chou—adults are at their wit's end. Grandpa Shen, a retired worker, returns to his hometown after forty years and witnesses the children's pranks as soon as he gets off the bus. Grandpa Shen is a disabled veteran who became handicapped while building railways. He decides to use his extra house to establish a "Qingshan Book House" to guide the children onto the right path of knowledge. He never expected that this kind act would be met with trouble from the children. Niu Niu's father opens an arcade and wants to buy Grandpa Shen's house to expand his business. After being refused by Grandpa Shen, Niu Niu volunteers to drive him away. He uses the lure of free arcade games to invite his three little friends to bully and harass Grandpa Shen; they play all kinds of pranks, kicking away his crutch, making it difficult for him to walk; they cut up books with a knife; during the chaos, they steal a precious gift from the Central Comfort Team that Grandpa Shen had received, a semiconductor radio he had used for over thirty years; and they dig a pit on Grandpa Shen's usual path, causing him to injure his arm. They even bully the Book House's first and only little reader, "Three Good" student Xiu Xiu. In the face of these childish troublemakers, Grandpa Shen does not take offense but patiently endures. With the help of teachers and Xiu Xiu, he works hard to manage the little book house, quietly dedicating his remaining life to the children in the mountains. As the book house becomes more popular with an increasing number of young readers, a smile of satisfaction appears on Grandpa Shen's face. Individual book vendors, a foolish couple, compete with Grandpa Shen for young readers using yellow publications, but Grandpa Shen patiently educates them and assists law enforcement in arresting the foolish person selling obscene publications. Grandpa Shen's generosity, kindness, and selfless justice earn him the respect of the town's residents and touch the hearts of the four mischievous children. They realize that they should not treat a kind old man this way, and they make a crutch for him. Just as they are about to deliver it to apologize, the old man falls victim to the foolish husband's retaliation. The children do not have time to apologize to Grandpa Shen face to face, leaving them with a deep regret that stays with them for life.
