Cavalry officer John Wayne encounters a woman named Angie, who lives with her son in the hostile territory of the Apaches. Under the protection of Apache leader Vittorio, she seems to feel safe. Later, Wayne gets into a conflict with Angie's depraved husband and is forced to kill him without knowing who he really is. Vittorio captures Wayne to save him, while Angie, unaware that her true husband has been killed by Wayne, claims that Wayne is her "husband." To rescue Angie from a forced marriage, Wayne reluctantly continues the lie, even though he knows the truth will eventually come out, for both Angie and Vittorio.
