In August 1939, prior to the outbreak of World War II, the Imperial German Navy dispatched three Deutschland-class pocket battleships to the Atlantic to disrupt British trade routes. Compared to the British battleships, the Deutschland class had a faster cruising speed to escape; compared to the British cruisers, the Deutschland class had superior armor and firepower. The "Admiral Graf Spee" was the most advanced of the Deutschland class, active over Allied routes in the Indian and Atlantic Oceans from August to November 1939. With only three British battlecruisers needing to be stationed at home to closely monitor the German Scharnhorst-class battleships, the task of hunting down the Deutschland class fell to the cruisers. On December 13, 1939, the light cruisers "Ajax" and "Achilles," along with the heavy cruiser "Exeter," discovered the "Admiral Graf Spee" at the mouth of the Río de la Plata in South America. After a chase, the "Admiral Graf Spee" exhausted its ammunition and sought refuge in the port of Montevideo, Uruguay, a neutral country. The Uruguayan government was keen to avoid involvement in the war, leaving the "Admiral Graf Spee" with only 72 hours. What fate awaited her and her crew?
