Will Smith portrays a real historical figure: Peter, an enslaved Black man who escaped the brutal tyranny of Southern slave owners in the United States, and the subject of the famous “scourged back” photograph that served as evidence of American slavery. The style of the film is described as more akin to Mel Gibson's "Apocalypto" than "12 Years a Slave." The screenplay is written by Willam N. Collage, based on Peter's true story: he escapes from his owner, enduring the relentless pursuit of cold-blooded hunters and the dangers of the Louisiana swamps, heading north. When he reaches the Union Army and is examined, Peter reveals his back, which is covered in scars from the lashes inflicted by overseers on the plantation. This scene was captured in the famous photograph "The Scourged Back," published in the May 1863 issue of the "Independent," and in the July 4th, 1863 edition of "Harper’s Weekly." The photograph became evidence of the brutal atrocities of American slavery, and its publication helped advance the abolitionist movement, encouraging many freed Black individuals to join the Union Army, while spreading globally, with rumors that countries like France refused to purchase cotton from the Southern U.S. after seeing the photo.
