In the early 20th century, in a remote mountain village in western Hunan, a floral bridal sedan arrives in Yangjiacao after a long journey. The girl in the sedan, named Xiao Xiao (played by Na Ren Hua), views marriage more as a lively and fun game at the age of just 12. After the wedding, Xiao Xiao takes on household chores like washing and cooking, and also has to play with her much younger husband. Six years pass in the blink of an eye, and Xiao Xiao has grown into a charming young woman. Her mother-in-law binds her chest, but cannot suppress her curiosity and longing for the outside world. By chance, Xiao Xiao falls in love with the long-term worker, Hua Gou, but a tragic fate awaits them in this secluded mountain village… This film is adapted from Shen Congwen's original novel "Xiao Xiao" and won the Golden Panda Award at the 1988 Montpellier International Festival in France, as well as the Don Quixote Award at the 1988 San Sebastián International Film Festival in Spain.
