This is one of the highest-investment and grandest classic period dramas in Japan from the 1990s, directed by the veteran director Yasuo Furuhata (known for "Train Man" and "The Station"), starring Ken Ogata, Shinichi Chiba, Hiroki Matsukata, Yuji Naga, and Tetsuro Tamba. Although the film belongs to the period drama genre, it differs from traditional period dramas. The plot is more compact, with continuous bloody killings and chase fights that make the viewer gasp for breath, with no dull moments in the film. The story takes place during the Tokugawa Shogunate, where Shogun Iemitsu believes that his eldest son, Takechiyo, does not resemble him, leading him to contemplate disinheriting him in favor of his younger son.
