American housewife Regina Lambert (played by Audrey Hepburn) encounters a man claiming to be Peter Joshua (played by Gary Grant) at a ski resort in Megève, France. Upon returning to Paris, Regina discovers her house has been ransacked and her husband Charles has been murdered. She is summoned by the American embassy and meets CIA agent Hamilton (played by Walter Matthau), only to find out that the three mysterious guests at Charles' funeral are his former WWII companions involved in gold embezzlement: Tex (played by James Coburn), Herman (played by George Kennedy), and Leopold (played by Ned Glass). Hamilton asks Regina to help the government locate the missing gold, while the three mysterious guests relentlessly pursue her. In a crisis, Peter suddenly appears to rescue her. Just as Regina falls in love, the three mysterious guests are murdered, and the focus shifts to the elusive Peter, putting Regina in unprecedented danger. Gary Grant and Audrey Hepburn received Golden Globe nominations for Best Actor and Best Actress for this film. Audrey Hepburn won the BAFTA Award for Best Actress.
