Nine-year-old Mary (Elle Fanning) leads a life of luxury but lacks the companionship of her parents. On Christmas Eve, she receives a precious gift from her uncle—a little house filled with puppets and a nutcracker. Overjoyed, Mary sees the nutcracker as her close companion and is surprised to find that it can speak, claiming to be named NC (Charlie Rowe), the prince of the toy kingdom. However, in a nightmare, the beautiful kingdom is taken over by the cruel Mouse King (John Turturro), who turns the prince into a puppet and banishes him. The curse can only be broken by finding someone who truly believes in fairy tales. Guided by the Snow Fairy (Yuliya Vysotskaya), Mary helps NC regain his human form and bravely agrees to return with him to the kingdom to defeat the Mouse King and free the subjects. However, can these two children, who possess no weapons but a pure heart, stand against the entire bloody army of mice and the deceitful Mouse King? The film features music mostly adapted from Tchaikovsky's symphonies, with parts taken from the ballet "The Nutcracker."
