Father Anthony Campbell (Hugh Grant) is entrusted by the church to travel to a remote Australian town with his wife, Estella, to persuade painter Norman Lindsay (Sam Neill) to remove a blasphemous painting from his upcoming solo exhibition. As soon as they arrive, the couple finds themselves in a bizarre situation: the foul-mouthed old man in the pub and the disinterested patrons reveal an unfriendly atmosphere. The artist, Lindsay, is particularly uncooperative. The chaotic arguments at the dinner table, the indifferent behavior of the male and female models, and the opposition between the town's residents and the painter models complicate Father Campbell's mission.
