George (Harry Hayden) runs a small restaurant. One day, two unexpected guests arrive at the restaurant; they are hitmen looking for Peter (Michael Hale), who eats here every day. Coincidentally, Peter didn't come in today. After the hitmen leave, George quickly calls Peter to warn him, but ultimately, Peter meets a tragic end. Peter had taken out insurance during his lifetime, with a woman named Quinny as the beneficiary. Quinny is a waitress at the restaurant who once saved Peter’s life when he was depressed and contemplating suicide. Shortly after, Peter's former friend Sam (Bill Walker) comes into the picture; he is now marrying Peter's first love, Laura. Sam tells investigators that Peter was a retired boxer who got involved with the mob after his career, engaging in various illegal activities, and all his misfortunes are closely tied to a woman named Katie (Ava Gardner).
