The story mainly takes place on a train traveling from the West Coast of the United States to Chicago. Young publisher George Kewai quickly forms a bond with the secretary of art connoisseur V. L. However, as they are getting cozy, a body is thrown out of the train window—it's V. L.'s corpse. George then becomes embroiled in a deadly chase by the murderers. Meanwhile, a federal agent named Swy, who is undercover on the train and knows the truth about Professor V.'s murder, is also killed by the powerful Roger. The situation escalates, and ultimately, the out-of-control locomotive crashes into the train station. Director Arthur Hiller has created a tight and brisk atmosphere, with one climax after another, leading to a spectacular train disaster scene that left audiences in awe twenty years ago.
