The Cangshan Mountains are majestic, the sea of clouds is vast. The sun filters through the dense leaves, scattering dappled light onto the forest. In the woods, a hunter's rifle is aimed at a lone wolf by the stream. As one wolf slowly transforms into a pack, Tian Da gasps in fear, once again returning empty-handed. Since the Japanese invasion, Tian Da has led his wife Cui Er and their infant son into these deep mountains to survive by hunting. But since the day they entered the forest, Cui Er hasn't heard Tian Da fire a shot, even as wolves have taken the sheep one by one; he hasn't discharged his gun. Thus, their days go by in a state of quiet but bitter hardship. One day, while hunting, Tian Da rescues a young wolf cub from a rock crevice. By the time the cub's leg injury is fully healed, it has formed a deep bond with Tian Da's family. Yet, amidst the howls of the mother wolf and the cries of Tian Da's son, the cub ultimately chooses the pack, reluctantly disappearing into the mountains. Soon, Tian Da's peaceful hunting life is disrupted by the landing of three Japanese special soldiers: Song Xin, Xiao Ye, and Sasaki. Along with Tian Da, the cub becomes a meal in the mouths of Song Xin and his comrades. In their haste to escape the mountains, Tian Da's family is captured and forced to be "guides." When Tian Da is compelled to find food for Song Xin, the wolf pack, aggrieved by the loss of the cub, relentlessly attacks the three Japanese soldiers. Song Xin narrowly escapes a wolf's jaws, and after Tian Da manages to subdue Xiao Ye, the wolves tear him apart. When Tian Da discovers that his wife Cui Er has been violated by Song Xin and lies dead in a pool of blood, the fear and compromise that once filled him are overtaken by a surge of extreme anger, prompting him to charge at Song Xin and Sasaki without hesitation. In the struggle with Song Xin and Sasaki, with his son Guai Wa in Song Xin's hands, Tian Da is forced to compromise once again. On the way out of the mountains, as they cross a ridge, Tian Da finally finds an opportunity to fight back, and as Guai Wa rolls down the slope, Tian Da rushes towards Song Xin without a second thought. At a crucial moment, the wolf pack is summoned by Guai Wa's cry, and Song Xin is finally devoured by the wolves, while the cunning Sasaki pays the price for his inhumanity with his life. The silent mountains return to peace after the bloodshed. As Tian Da calls out for his son with a hoarse voice, Guai Wa is carried off by the wolf pack for protection. In that moment, the morning glow is fiery, and the forest is bathed in golden light.
