Kyuuki Yoshichiro (played by Hiroshi Yakusho) is a senior editor at a publishing house, his wife Kyuuki Fumie (played by Tomoko Hoshino) designs ceramic products, and their adult daughter works in a hospital, rarely coming home. Yoshichiro finds family life dull, and the couple always behaves politely towards each other. Yoshichiro has a lover, the part-time calligraphy teacher Matsubara Rinko (played by Hitomi Kuroki). Rinko has an elegant demeanor and is a wise woman. Unfortunately, she is married to a boring doctor, Matsubara Haruhiko. He is cold, resulting in an empty marriage. One day, he firmly tells Rinko that he will never divorce her, revealing that he has evidence of his wife's infidelity. On the other hand, Fumie silently endures and ultimately has no choice but to divorce. As winter arrives, how can Yoshichiro and Rinko be together forever?
