Alex (played by Hugh Grant) is a washed-up 80s pop singer who has finally started to receive more performance opportunities in recent years. He even gets an invitation from pop diva Cora to write a song and duet on it. However, Alex is experiencing a creative block; after years without composing music and never having written lyrics before, he now has to come up with a hit song in just a few days. Just when Alex is feeling extremely distressed, he meets Sophie (played by Drew Barrymore), a beautiful girl who is skilled with words. The lyrics she casually sings please Alex immensely, and after several invitations, Sophie agrees to collaborate with him. But Sophie is still stuck in the aftermath of a failed relationship, and she is afraid of commitment. As Alex and Sophie's feelings for each other begin to deepen, they must face their differences together...
