Ellen Andrews (played by Claudette Colbert) faces strong opposition from her wealthy father (Walter Connolly) regarding her marriage to pilot King Westley (Jameson Thomas). Trapped on a yacht, Ellen's hunger strike fails, leading her to jump into the sea to find King. Her desperate father dispatches detectives to track her down, but clever Ellen's companion (Emma Tansy) buys a bus ticket to New York right under the detectives' noses. The travel plans seem perfect, but naive Ellen not only has her luggage stolen but also loses her ticket, missing the bus. Former reporter Peter Warne (Clark Gable), who finds the ticket, decides to wait at the station to return it to Ellen. What sparks will fly between the impoverished Ellen and the unemployed Peter?
