Reggie (Carole Lombard) never believes in any kind of bullshit love. Her only life goal is to attach herself to a wealthy man and rise to the top, like a phoenix. Alan (Ralph Bellamy) is a wealthy man with a disability, and he is uncertain about his feelings for Reggie. He knows that although Reggie claims to treat love like dirt, there will certainly be a man in this world who will make her fall in love. Soon, this man appears, named Theodore (Fred MacMurray). At first, Reggie thinks Theodore is just a worthless, poor guy, but then she unexpectedly discovers that this plain-looking man is actually rich, and her dream is within reach. But soon Reggie is disappointed to learn that he already has a fiancée.
