Jan Piszczek (played by Bogumil Kobiela) is a little guy who has had bad luck all his life. He is often scolded by his tailor father at home and bullied by classmates at school. After growing up handsome, he is treated differently as a Jew because of his big nose. During his time as a tutor, he experiences first love, but ends up confusedly caught up in a parade, gets beaten up by military police, and subsequently loses both his job and his romance. He then decides to enlist, enduring hardships to reach his reporting location only to find it a ghost town, and out of curiosity, he tries on a Polish officer's uniform, which leads to his arrest by the Nazis and imprisonment in a concentration camp. In prison, he pretends to be a high-ranking officer but after his lies are exposed, he is treated as a spy by his companions. When the war finally ends, Piszczek is released. How will he survive in the new social system?
