15-year-old high school student Mia (played by Anne Hathaway) lives with her mother in the United States but lacks confidence and is often mocked by her classmates. On her 16th birthday, after meeting her grandmother (played by Julie Andrews), she discovers that this elegant lady is the queen of the small European country of Genovia, and Mia is actually the princess of that nation. Initially, Mia is very reluctant, but with her mother's mediation, her attitude starts to soften. In order to smoothly inherit the throne, the queen must implement a series of changes for her granddaughter, which greatly troubles Mia, who is used to a carefree lifestyle, even causing conflicts with her best friends. However, once Mia's identity is revealed, she suddenly receives intense media attention. The suddenness of it all makes Mia want to escape, but fortunately, through her father's diary, she regains her confidence. Mia becomes a princess and finds the love she desires.
