Princess Mia (Anne Hathaway) returns to Genovia after graduating from university. Her arrival causes a nationwide sensation, and Mia is very excited about it. However, during a royal hearing, the Chief Justice announces that the princess must marry in order to inherit the throne. Mia has 30 days to get engaged, or she will have to forfeit her claim to the throne. The Queen (Julie Andrews) hurriedly helps Mia choose a suitor with her assistants. After much deliberation, Mia finally gets engaged to a young and handsome nobleman. However, young Nicholas (Chris Pine), who is vying for the throne, develops an unspoken affection for Mia.
