An old man named Woody (Bruce Dern) receives an advertisement stating that he has won a million-dollar prize, which he wholeheartedly believes. He decides to walk from Billings, Montana to Lincoln, Nebraska to claim his prize. His wife and two sons repeatedly try to dissuade him, but ultimately, his younger son David (Will Forte) decides to drive him to Lincoln to collect the winnings. On the way to Lincoln, they pass Woody's hometown and decide to visit relatives they haven't seen in a long time. During their short stay in the town, everyone learns about Woody's lottery win, and he quickly becomes a local celebrity, attracting old creditors. David gradually learns about Woody's unknown past and gains a new understanding of his father...
