Mario (Alessio Boni) and Nicola (Luigi Lo Cascio) are close brothers, but the poetry-loving Mario fails his exam due to a disagreement with the professor, while Nicola, by pleasing the professor, receives high marks. A group of friends plans a graduation trip, but Mario brings along an unexpected guest—an injured girl named Giulia (Jasmine Trinca) whom he rescued from a mental hospital. The brothers decide to accompany her in search of her family. Amidst a revolutionary tide, Mario abandons his studies to join the police, while Nicola wanders abroad to become a psychiatrist. A flood in Florence brings the brothers back together, at which point Nicola has married the pianist Giulia. Meanwhile, Mario falls in love at first sight with photographer Mirella. Their relationships are also tested by the social turmoil... This film, with a runtime of 6 hours, reflects the immense social changes in Italy from 1966 to 2000 through the ups and downs of an Italian family.
