The story is based on the true tale of 60-year-old taxi driver Kempton Bunton, who stole a Goya painting from the National Gallery in London in 1961. Bunton sent a ransom note stating that he would only return the painting if the British government agreed to provide free television for the elderly. However, it turned out he was lying, as he never came forward in the next 50 years. This incident was also the first and only theft in the history of the National Gallery.
