For a long time, Paula (Marsha Mason) has been living with her daughter Lucy (Quinn Cummings) and her boyfriend in a cohabiting situation. One day, Paula is shocked to discover that her boyfriend not only left without saying goodbye but also rented their last sanctuary—their house—to another stranger, Elliot (Richard Dreyfuss). Fortunately, Elliot is a kind man who not only agrees to let Paula and her daughter continue living there but also takes good care of them in their daily lives. As time goes by, a romantic spark naturally arises between Paula and Elliot. However, just then, Elliot receives a wonderful opportunity at work that requires him to move to another city. Paula does not want Elliot to leave, but Elliot also does not want to give up this chance.
