Katherine (Loretta Young) is born into an ordinary farming family. To rise to a higher social class, Katherine decides to move to the big city to study nursing and become a nurse. However, just as her dream is about to take flight, she is hit by a tsunami; all her savings are swindled away by a con artist, and she faces the tragic fate of being homeless. Fortunately, Katherine sees a job advertisement, and young politician Glenn (Joseph Cotten) is hiring a maid for his mansion. Thus, Katherine goes to apply for the job. Katherine, clever and charming, quickly earns the trust of the Glenn family, bringing a touch of joy to the dreary mansion. Furthermore, Glenn gradually falls in love with this quirky and hardworking girl.
