Katherine (Loretta Young) is born into an ordinary farming family. To rise to a higher social class, Katherine decides to move to the big city to study nursing and become a nurse. However, just as her dream is about to take flight, she is hit by a tsunami; all her savings are swindled away by a con artist, and she faces the tragic fate of being homeless.
