Abagon (played by Louis de Funès) is a well-known miser. After losing his wife at a young age, he leads a quiet life with his daughter Alice (played by Claire Dupray) and son Cléante (played by Pierre Aussedat). Living off high-interest loans, Abagon buries his hard-earned gold coins in the garden, which he considers the safest and most secure place. Abagon has been pursuing a young woman named Marianne (played by Madeleine Barbulée), but unexpectedly, Marianne and Cléante are in love with each other. When they are caught together in the garden by Abagon, he is very upset. As if that weren't enough, the gold coins Abagon buried underground are stolen. Cléante promises his father he will find out who the thief is, but in return, he must bless his love for Marianne.
