The story takes place in a retirement home specifically for retired opera singers, where the star residents are Wilf (Billy Connolly), Reggie (Tom Courtenay), and Cissy (Pauline Collins). Each year, these three outstanding performers raise funds for the operation of the home through their trio performances. Though the home is small, every elderly resident finds joy and peace there. The arrival of Jean (Maggie Smith) disrupts the tranquil life of the others. This proud and combative woman is a famous singer in the opera world and also Reggie's ex-wife. Forced by life’s circumstances, Jean moves into the retirement home, and her presence, particularly that of her ex-husband Reggie, leaves her feeling resentful. With Jean’s inclusion, the trio turns into a quartet, but the rehearsals do not improve with the addition of a skilled singer, leading to troubles and disputes.
