Carl Weaver (Steve Carell) reaches middle age, and the midlife crisis arrives as expected—his wife Emily (Julianne Moore) files for divorce, leaving him at a loss when facing their children. Returning to the dating scene, Carl realizes that he has fallen out of touch with modern romance. Fortunately, he meets playboy expert Jacob Palmer (Ryan Gosling), who helps him reinvent himself and teaches him the latest trendy methods to win a woman's heart. As Carl re-enters the dating world, it is actually Jacob who encounters romantic troubles; he meets a girl named Hannah (Emma Stone), which makes him realize that true love has nothing to do with tricks or games—he no longer cares about "scoring" with her and would rather talk to her all night. As Carl’s luck with women improves, he gradually discovers that his family remains his greatest concern. Jacob begins to find himself willing to give up his playboy lifestyle for Hannah, while Carl's 13-year-old son also starts to experience the pangs of young love. Just how crazy and foolish love can be becomes clear when Hannah invites Jacob over for dinner…
