The story takes place at the end of the Southern Song Dynasty. A loyal minister, Jiao Zan (played by Yi Zhen), becomes frustrated with the court's inability to distinguish right from wrong and the frequent framing of loyal officials. In a fit of anger, he kills the censor Xie Jinwu. The court, acknowledging his contributions against the Liao, spares his life and sends him to Shamen Island as punishment. The Sancha Crossing Inn is a necessary stop on the way to Shamen Island, and the innkeeper Liu Lihua (played by Wu Yue) serves guests with donkey meat, aided by a hunchbacked assistant (played by Zhao Liang). One day, Xie Jinwu's wife (played by Shidai Mei) finds Liu Lihua and uses her charms to make a deal with him to kill Jiao Zan as revenge for her husband. A messenger brings the shackled Jiao Zan to the inn for a rest, and he quickly recognizes the innkeeper as Liu Lihua, whom he had previously saved. Jiao Zan, suffering greatly from his chains, begs Liu Lihua to end his life with a knife. Liu Lihua is initially unable to comply, but upon seeing Jiao Zan's miserable state, he reluctantly agrees to fulfill his wish. Just as he raises the knife, an unexpected miracle occurs...
