Tammy (played by Melissa McCarthy) is not young anymore, and her life has become increasingly bleak. An accident causes her to lose her beloved car, and soon after, she is fired by her boss. The consecutive hits and setbacks leave her disheartened. When she seeks warmth and comfort from her husband, she discovers he has taken a mistress, who unfortunately lives right next door, driving Tammy into despair. Just when her life seems to be at a dead end, her grandmother Pearl (played by Susan Sarandon) comes to her side. However, Pearl's arrival does not bring joy, as she is a rude and alcoholic old lady. Pearl insists on taking Tammy on a trip to Niagara Falls, and thus the two embark on a journey that is destined to be anything but peaceful.
