Paleobiologist Rick Marshall (played by Will Ferrell) proposes the idea of time travel and secures $15 million in funding to develop a superluminal particle accelerator for traversing time and space. However, the public is skeptical, ridiculing and criticizing him instead. For three years, Rick is stuck teaching at an elementary school, feeling hopeless. One day, a beautiful woman from Cambridge named Holly (played by Anna Friel) approaches Rick with an astonishing fossil, encouraging him to continue his research. With renewed confidence, Rick ultimately builds the superluminal particle accelerator, and he and Holly travel to the fossil's discovery site to test time travel. Under the somewhat neurotic guidance of Will (played by Danny McBride), they set off in an inflatable raft. Unexpectedly, a powerful earthquake strikes, and the three are swept into an unknown world where an adventure full of thrills and excitement begins...
