Teenage Claire Lyons (Ellen Marlow) moves with her parents from Orlando to Westchester. Because they have not yet found a suitable place to live, the Lyons family temporarily stays at the home of their friend William Brock (David Chisum). Brock's daughter, Massie (Elizabeth McLaughlin), lives in luxury and has a flamboyant personality. The private girls’ school she attends, Octavian Country Day School, is filled with privileged girls. To her, Claire, who dresses simply and has a pure personality, is like an ugly duckling.
