U.S. Air Force General Jack Ripper (played by Sterling Hayden) suspects that the "decaying thought" of the Soviets is poisoning the "pure and good" American people. He therefore orders a flight squadron armed with nuclear warheads to head to the Soviet Union and deliver a devastating nuclear strike against the enemy. Upon learning of this, the Soviets immediately call U.S. President Merkin Muffley (played by Peter Sellers) and threaten that if their territory is attacked, they will activate the "doomsday device" at any cost. This device has the power to destroy all life on Earth. A war concerning the fate of all humanity and the entire planet thus quietly and absurdly begins… The film is adapted from Peter George's 1958 novel "Red Alert" and is known as part of the "Future Trilogy" alongside "2001: A Space Odyssey" and "A Clockwork Orange."
