In winter, an elderly woman (Jin Yaqin) living alone in a traditional courtyard welcomes a girl from out of town (Gong Zhe) who comes to study in Beijing. The girl wants to rent a room close to her school but finds the elderly woman's asking price too high. The elderly woman, with an expression of either wanting her to stay or leave, refuses to lower the price. The girl, left with no choice, rents the room, and the two begin a tumultuous host-guest relationship marked by constant bickering. Whether it’s installing a phone, paying for the bill, using the electric stove, or borrowing the refrigerator, the girl feels that the elderly woman is always calculating against her, leaving her feeling aggrieved, while the elderly woman also takes a strong dislike to her.
However, as time goes by, they gradually become each other’s support. The seasons pass through spring and summer, and the elderly woman witnesses the girl’s joys and sorrows, especially in love, which alleviates her own loneliness in her later years. As autumn arrives, the girl finds a better place to live and prepares to leave the elderly woman, causing her spirit to suddenly decline.
