The history of human civilization began when ancient apes stood upright. In the Stone Age, people created artistic styles from the random phenomena of life; the Ten Commandments were actually born from a mistake; in the great city of Rome, people displayed various novel inventions at the marketplace, while the stand-up politician Cacus (played by Mel Brooks), who was on unemployment benefits, got a chance to perform in the palace through the businessman Sweet. Cacus met the talent-sold Black Joe and the Empress's maid Mary at the marketplace. During his political stand-up routine in front of Caesar, Cacus mistakenly said something that enraged the Emperor. Originally facing execution, Cacus and Joe fought their way out of the palace and, with Mary's help, began a life on the run; the subsequent stories of the Spanish Inquisition and the French Revolution are presented with a unique flavor in director Mel Brooks's parody.
