Nicolas Cage plays Paul Matthews, an ordinary family man with a lifetime professorship, who loves evolutionary biology and feels anxiety about his lack of accomplishments. One day, he discovers that he appears in other people's dreams. Just like in real life, his presence in these dreams is mundane and non-intrusive—he is simply there, coldly staring at strangers' fantasies and nightmares.
