During World War II, a group of American prisoners of war were held in a German prison, and the story unfolds in Stalag 17. Two prisoners attempted to escape but were killed by the Germans, leading the inmates to suspect that one of them had betrayed their trust. All suspicion centers on one person - the cunning Sefton (played by William Holden). Although Sefton is also a prisoner, he has made a considerable amount of money by organizing "horse races," selling alcohol, and renting out telescopes. Soon, an American lieutenant, Dunbar (Don Taylor), is thrown into the prison after causing an explosion at the Frankfurt train station that killed many Germans. However, this incident comes to the attention of German officer Oberst von Scherbach (Otto Preminger). Sefton is considered the mole who leaked information and receives a beating. Yet, he continues to claim his innocence. Dunbar is about to be executed by the Nazis. Who is the real traitor? Will Lieutenant Dunbar manage to escape his fate? The film stars William Holden, who won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1954, and director Billy Wilder also received a nomination for Best Director.
