"My Godfrey" begins in a dilapidated junkyard, sharply mocking the utterly boring "hunting" games of the aristocrats, while also introducing the down-to-earth male protagonist, Godfrey, into a fascinating yet completely decadent bourgeois family. It is filled with conflict; the sister despises him and tries to frame him, while the kind-hearted younger sister has a secret affection for the poor but resourceful butler. In fact, this butler is a graduate of a prestigious university, and he secretly invests the family's money, ultimately saving them from bankruptcy and building a "junkyard" club for the homeless. Of course, the presence of a beautiful love interest is also essential. The male lead, William Powell, is poised and elegant, gaining fame in Hollywood through the detective comedy series "The Thin Man"; the younger sister is played by Carole Lombard, one of America's rare genius comedic actresses, who married Gable and starred in the anti-war masterpiece "Nothing Sacred" directed by Lubitsch in 1942. Unfortunately, the film had not yet been released when Lombard sadly died in a plane crash in Las Vegas.
